1B Studio Midterm Project
Pool House + Pool Study
Designed by Sophie Hohmann
SCI-Arc 2026

An early study focused on understanding the abstract movement of artistic swimming and translating gestures into shape and form.
Initially, using a polyhedron as a device to mimic key movements in artistic swimming
and establishing a clear datum (in this case, the waterline), unique curves and expressions emerge; a play between chance and control is then delineated in concrete form.

The idea of sharpness and softness is found early in the swimmer’s gestures and is later intensified across multiple media and studies throughout this project.
Discoveries made in this midterm carry their own powerful sentiments, and through each study uncover a new set of realms, ultimately laying a strong foundation for the final proposal.

Artistic swimming gestures are annotated through the movement of a polyhedron.
Abstract gestures are translated into a ribbon model. The relationship between scale, color, and contrast is established.
